How to ship part of an order and split the rest off
When some items of an order are not in stock yet, you don't have to skip the whole order. Ship the items you have packed now; the rest becomes a new part of the same order and waits in the queue until it can be packed. The customer receives two deliveries, and both parts stay linked on their order pages.
- 1
Pack what you have. In Pick and Pack, confirm the items that are on the shelf into the current shipment as usual.
- 2
Ship it without the rest. With a scanner, click Ship only this shipment under the open shipment block (it reads Ship only these N shipments when several are sealed). In No-scan mode, seal the shipments in the planner first, then click Ship sealed parcels next to Rest not here yet? at the bottom of the screen.
- 3
Confirm the split. The Ship only what is packed? window explains the result: open shipments are sealed and their labels printed, the items you have not packed move to a new part of this order and go back to the queue, and the customer receives the rest in a separate delivery. Click Split off the rest.
- 4
Finish the order you have. A confirmation names the new part - The unpacked items moved to #1001-b - and you complete this order as usual: scan the labels or click complete.
- 5
Pack the rest later. The new part appears in the queue as its own order, numbered with a letter suffix (#1001-b). Its order page lists the other parts under Parts of this order, and so does the original. Pack it like any other order once the items arrive.
Good to know
- Shipping in parts is available for Shopify orders, and only once Split orders is enabled in Settings → General → Pick-and-Pack settings - the button doesn't appear before that. Store pick-up orders always ship whole.
- To keep the split-off part out of the next packer's way, enable Skip what is left of a partly shipped order in the same settings section. The new part then waits in Skipped until someone brings it back to the queue with Reset Fulfillment, instead of loading for the next packer straight away.
- Split orders also splits Shopify orders automatically by stock location: an order whose items are assigned to two or more fulfillment locations becomes one part per location, each with its own shipment, label and Shopify fulfillment. Cash on delivery and the shipping price stay on the first part; store pick-up orders are never split.
- Edits to items on one part are not applied to parts that are locked or already packed - the order page says so when that happens.
